Mayoral Introduction Ceremony
The Mayoral Introduction Ceremony took place at the Great Torrington Town And Community Hall on Tuesday 6th June, during which, Cllr Smith was officially sworn in as Mayor for his third term and Cllr Cloke was sworn in as Deputy Mayor for the coming year.
During the ceremony Andrew Giles, Vice-Chair Great Torrington Commons Conservators was presented with the Mayor’s Good Citizen Award in recognition of the significant fundraising he’s done for the commons through second hand book sales.
Stuart Davey was presented with the Howe Plate in recognition of his voluntary work as expert Quiz Master at the Torrington Arms for many years. Through his quizzes Stuart has raised many thousands of pounds for many local and national charities.
Retiring Mayor’s Cadet Corporal Leah Roy was thanked for her assistance by the Mayor who presented her with a certificate to commemorate her service. Corporal Roy then passed the baton to Sergeant Lee during an official handover, he will now serve as the Mayor’s Cadet for the coming year.
The Mayor’s Chaplain was announced as Fr Steve Turner from St Michael and All Angels Church who was delighted to be offered the opportunity to work closely with the Mayor and learn more about Great Torrington’s traditions.
Cheques of £550 each were presented to the Mayor’s Charities for last year, Sandra Crawley accepted on behalf of Devon Air Ambulance and District Commissioner Emma Keil accepted on behalf of the Torrington District Guides Association.
A pleasant evening was had by all who attended.
