Built on the site of an ancient settlement atop an inland cliff with the River Torridge below, Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming market town which enjoys spectacular views across rolling hills and unspoilt green countryside with a fascinating and varied history. The town centre hosts a plethora of unique independent shops, with a number of individual café’s serving a variety of refreshments. In addition to this, there is a historic undercover market which hosts an eclectic mix of more retail shopping options.
On the 5th March, the town is holding a Craft, Food and Drinks Fair across 4 venues. Following this event, the Pannier Market will bounce into Spring with renewed vigour as it also opens up to stall holders on a Friday and Saturday each week. Speciality markets are planned along with weekly offerings that complement the local shops.
Check out the town map below, which lists local retail and business options. Trail maps can be obtained from many of the shops in the town and are all free of charge.
Why not pop into Great Torrington; enjoy a unique shopping experience and have a relaxing lunch. You could also take in a Heritage Trail walk, enjoy the 365 acres of common land, visit the Plough Arts Centre, Dartington Crystal or nearby Rosemoor Gardens.
