In 2013 Torridge District Council introduced a series of Dog Control Orders (DCOs) under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. This designated offences of failing to pick up faeces, failure to put a dog on a lead (by location or by direction) and exclusion of dogs from specified areas.

The DCO provisions have been superseded by the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014. The new provisions available under this Act to tackle dog related issues is by the designation of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). Before these provisions can be enacted, the proposals must be subject to consultation.

Torridge District Council has launched a six week consultation on the proposals, which can be accessed via their website here:

http://www.torridge.gov.uk/article/16950/Torridge---Dog-Control-Public-Consultation---until-25th-March-2018

Alternatively, hard copies are available at Torridge District Council reception points.

The consultation consists of the draft wording of the order, along with a plans/a schedule of the areas it will cover. Comments are invited on both. The consultation run’s until the 25th March, following which the feedback will be considered as part of the determination process for the adoption of the provisions.

Act of Vandalism

Torridge District Council has recently provided two picnic tables for users of the Calf Street Play Area.  Last Tuesday, the Town Council’s Technician found one of the benches vandalised as per attached photo.  Torridge District Council has confirmed that they will be removing both benches as this is the second act of vandalism on the benches over the past couple of months. If anyone knows anything about who is involved in these acts, please contact the Police as soon as possible on 101.

Once again, the minority has spoiled things for the majority and we all have to pay the cost.

Michael Tighe

Town Clerk

May Fair 2017 - Queen & entourage

May Fair day 2017 was another great success with beautiful weather and large crowds enjoying the celebrations. Poppy Rooke was crowned as this years May Queen with Tia Lewis as her Crowner and Matthew Lawton and Billy Mitchell as Heralds. Attendants were Holly Chanell, Isabella Maslanek, Kacey Ashton, Katie Maxam, Cadee Willoughby, Matilda Vallely, Isabel Tucker and Lola Barber.  The theme this year was a "Celebration of Nursing", depicted by nurses caring for soldiers during the Crimean War, I'm sure you will agree the children all look stunning.

Mayor's chosen Charities

My chosen two charities this year are the North Devon Hospice and the Torrington Army Cadets.

I have supported the North Devon Hospice for several years fundraising.  Two years ago I lost a good friend and workmate who received excellent care at the hospice, but sadly passed away.  I have chosen the North Devon Hospice as one of my charities in memory of this friend and for all they do in our local community.

During a visit I made to the Army Cadet Force a few months ago I was impressed at the range of activities the youngsters get involved in and the commitment of all of the adult helpers who freely give their time to developing the youngsters. The Cadets also do an enormous amount of work in our community throughout the year and it is for these reasons that I wanted to give my support to this organisation.
